Ship Loading

Problems occur with airborne dust when product is loaded into ship holds together with additional fugitive dust being created during conveying to the loading point.

When loading from high port side docking points, gravity fed loading chutes can cause serious dust problems due to the velocity of the product being loaded, dust reduction can be made prioir to the actual loading point by adding low volumes of moisture at the various transfer points along the conveyor which supplies the ship loader, small volumes of water (0.1% moisture addition) at each available point will not cause overwetting of the product or reduce it’s quality. Even food produce such as grain will not suffer from small additions of water.

It is likely to be a difficult engineering problem to mount nozzles at the point of loading as the loading chute has to move to all parts of the ships hold in order to evenly distribute the material, however, by utilising various recoiling hose systems and by engineering protective shields, successful dust suppression can be achieved.
